Welcome to Spring 2021

Happy New Year to All!

I hope you have all had a lovely and safe Christmas and I Look forward to welcoming you back into to school next week.

There will be a few changes in class and we will be beginning our exciting new topic. This begins with us exploring the differences in animals, and develops to looking at dinosaurs and learning about the Condover Mammoth!

We will also be looking at hot and cold places around the world!

In the event of a child needing to self-isolate, we would ask them to complete the following learning at home every day if they are well. Please also use the useful links to explore other home learning options.

Reading (10/15 mins daily) = Reading aloud and sharing books together will help your reading improve. Please use your school home reading books or your own books to read every day.

Phonics (20 mins daily) = The Phonics homework Books have all their phonemes in for information to support home learning. You can also access free games on phonicsplay.co.uk to practise phases 1-4

Year 1 Spelling (10 mins daily) = Spelling shed assignments refresh weekly and are linked to the homework pack spelling sheets. Remember you can always do Spell Well on scrap paper to practise spellings too.

Writing (10 mins daily) = Practising writing is important. You can practise your handwriting by copying out letters and words from your phonics book. You could do some news writing, create a story, write a poem or write some instructions. Please write every day.

Maths Number Facts (20 mins daily) = You can use Number gym and Maths shed for number facts practice as well as completing the homework pack KIRFs sheets. This term our focus is time but please continue to work on easy number calculations up to 10.  Also practise writing numbers as at this age we all can struggle to make sure our numbers are formed properly and the correct way around!

Year 1 Maths Mastery (30 mins daily) = Please watch the White Rose Maths home learning video and complete the premium resources worksheets which will be emailed to you.

Maybe you would also like to create a project book linked to our science on animals or our History topic on the Condover Mammoth.

It was also a lovely atmosphere and great to see the children in there own clothes and their Pudsey hats  on Friday. Well done for raising so much money.

Last week we also had a Kindness Focus for the week. We explored what it means to be kind, reading books together based on kindness and suggesting ways we can be kind, ending the week on World Kindness Day on Friday by making Kindness hearts.

Another busy week at school with a fabulous Forest School where we visited the secret stream (photos to follow). Other highlights of the week were the Wonderful Wednesday Music lesson  with Mr Benett and the Mr Brough assembly with the school, where each class announces their Star of the whole school taking part! This week we will be doing all of the above and continuing with our work on friendship and working on our topic of Storytelling

In Phonics Year 1 will be continuing to recap and learn the Phase 3 Digraphs and focusing on handwriting skills.

In Maths Reception will be continuing their development of number understanding and Year 1 will continue to consolidate their knowledge of number to 10 and counting.

Week Beginning 12-10-20

Another great week at school with again a fabulous (but intense removing waterproofs to get back on the bus) session where we created a forest school timeline. As you have probably heard watching crab apples float down the Secret Stream formed a large part of the afternoon.  In addition again Wednesday music was lovely. The children really do love these sessions and it is a pleasure to watch them interact and focus.

We covered the planned timelines in our topic work, looking at a lunch time, day time and the children's personal timelines and then moving on to look at a timeline of how books and storytelling has changed.

We also began to explore printing and did some printing on some Elephant Dung Paper I had brought back from a holiday in the past! The 'special' paper made it a lot more fun :)) On Monday I will take some photos of the fabulous job the children did and put them on here.

This week we will be again looking at books and storytelling in topic time. We will be exploring how books are made and making our own paper (not from elephant dung- unless anyone has some on hand!). We will also be doing some more work on Traditional tales and finding out which are our favourites. If you would like to share your family's favourite please send in a photo via email and we could use them in our storytelling display.

In Phonics Year 1 will be going on to recap the often difficult trigraphs (three letters that make a sound- air, igh, ear, ure) from Phase 3 and continuing to focus on handwriting skills.

Reception will be continuing learn their phonemes from Phase 2 and have now moved on to set 2. I am so pleased with the progress they are making.

In Maths Reception will be continuing their development of number to 10 recognition and understanding and Year 1 will continue to consolidate their knowledge of number by comparing, looking for patterns and adding one more and less.

Week Beginning 19-10-20

Another great week at school ending with a fabulous Friday PE with Jack and our Traditional Tale survey- Apparently the Gingerbread man is the favourite in our class.

Forest School went well with the children enjoying having Mrs Bury back and embracing the new procedures aimed at making waterproof removal smoother!

Bags packed for going back to school!!!

On Wednesday we planned our paper making activity and made paper mulch to soak over night. Thursday afternoon I really enjoyed messily making our paper and put it under boxes in the class. We hope to reveal it on Monday. Fingers crossed!!! Again photos to follow.

This week we will be again looking at books and storytelling in topic time. We will be  learning about and making a cartouche (possibly the first book) with clay and comparing old and new by asking questions. We will also see how our paper came out and possible use it. Our survey of Traditional tales in class went well. If you would like to share your family's favourite please send in a photo via email and we could use them in our storytelling display.

In Phonics  it is a tricky word focus for both groups!

Year 1 will be learning the tricky words from Phase 3 and continuing to focus on handwriting skills.

Reception will be continuing learn their phonemes from Phase 2, will finish set 2 and also begin to learn the tricky words . I continue to be impressed by the  progress they are making.

In Maths Reception will be consolidating their knowledge of numbers to % looking at comparing and one more and less.

In maths Year 1 will developing their knowledge of comparing and pattern using the correct vocabulary effectively and beginning their work on addition.

Have a relaxing Half Term everyone. You deserve it!!!

I hope that you have all managed to enjoy some rest over the Easter period and that you are all keeping well and safe. It does feel strange not to be seeing you and I am missing all of the class greatly.

Reception and Year 1 is all about practical experiences and learning the basics really well. Children will keep learning no matter what you choose to do! Everyday activities, such as cooking, gardening, writing emails, etc., hold so many learning opportunities. When we return to school, we will take the children from where they are so please don’t worry. This is a different way of life and work for all of us and we are all trying hard to navigate our way through it. Just do what you can and find what works for your own family.

Roman has already this week sent in some fabulous photos of what he has been up to! The cheesecake looks delicious!

Here are some great photos from Grace and Eli who walked 10 miles over the Brown Clee Hill to the highest point in Shropshire, on Abdon Burf and to a lake. They were very lucky and saw wild horses, huge fish, dragon flies, tadpoles, a great crested newt, a frog and heard the cuckoo. Eli played on a rope swing and dipped his feet in the lake. The last photo is of the war memorial and Eli is finding information from his great grandad about where the planes crashed.

What a fantastic walk Eli!  I look forward to hearing what you find out about the planes :)
